Vanier Sablierie quarry, a hidden swimming hole for the summer

I took advantage of the unexpectedly gorgeous sunny Sunday last weekend by hitting up the Sabliere Vanier Sand Quarry in Aylmer for a swim and a sunburn with some friends.

This was my first time out at the quarry for an illegal dip (it is private property, after all). Thee are three huge pools of crisp, cool, and clean(-looking) blue-green water line by a couple kilometers of sandy and gravelly beaches. It was pretty quiet when I got there – just one other small group of people – but quickly filled up with swimmers, dog walkers, pick-up trucks, motorbikes, ATVs, even a couple sea-doo’s (why do you have a sea-doo if you don’t have somewhere to use it?)

Despite the mid-afternoon crowd, my gang was pretty well secluded and unbothered, expect for the occasional fly-boy fly-by on a motocross… my lady friends weren’t too impressed 😉 Without a doubt one of the best-kept secret swimming holes around Ottawa and Gatineau!

I was just swimming there today. I’m still new to the Ottawa region, and some friends took me there for the first time.

Its a really great spot, however they have recently started gravel excavation on one side of the lake, destroying it’s pristine appearance. Large gravel mounds have replaced what was apparently once a tree lined beach.

It’s too bad the property own has chosen this direction, instead of re-developing it as a recreation area.
