In a decision that is likely to cut both ways, the NCC has completed renovations to the Brown Cabin, changing it over from an overnight rental to a day-use cabin for skiers.

The Brown Cabin, about a 3k hike or ski from P17, has long been a favourite overnight destination for large groups – able to accommodate up to 18 people or so with bunk beds, a long dining table, and a well-equipped galley kitchen.

I know of many families and groups who have annual overnight stays with their friends and friends’ kids, and the Brown Cabin was especially well suited to large groups with kids, with a short and pretty easy trail into it and the large communal space good for herding kids.

I’m sad this will no long be available to large groups. We had a annual tradition of going there with our kids and family friends

However, based on comments on the Gatineau Park Facebook page post announcing the news, many Gatineau Park users see this as a great move for kids and new skiers, providing a short and easy trail with a great destination.

Amazing news! For little kids still just learning how to XC ski the only option for a lunch or dinner stop before this was Renaud cabin. This will be an excellent alternative, and much less of a drive to P17 than P19 for everyone from Wakefield-Ottawa. I suspect my family and I will be at this cabin every Sunday all winter long!

Can’t make everyone happy I guess. Looking forward to skiing in tho!
