Just days after Gatineau Park beaches opened for the season, one has gone down to a bloom of blue-green algae, cyanobacteria.
The NCC posted this notice on their website and social media accounts this morning:
The National Capital Commission wishes to advise users of Gatineau Park that O’Brien Beach at Meech Lake is currently closed. A bloom of cyanobacteria (Blue-Green Algae) was observed today near the edge of the beach.
As a preventative measure to ensure public health and safety, the NCC decided to close the beach. Rest assured that the beach will not re-open until all public safety requirements have been met. Our lifeguards are trained to recognize a cyanobacteria bloom and are thus ensuring continued monitoring throughout the swimming season.
Blanchet Beach at Meech Lake remains open to swimmers.
