One of the most epic and Canadian trips you can take around Ottawa is to paddle the length of the Rideau Canal it’s full length from Kingston to Ottawa. At about 200 kilometres, its a route rich with history and side-trip possibilities.
I haven’t tackled this one yet, but when I do i’ll be looking for a detailed guidebook to help with all the little details – campsites,s portages, locks, can I swim here??
And my first stop will be Watson’s Paddling Guide to the Rideau Canal. This 182 page detailed guide to paddling the Rideau Canal contains a description of the entire route with 18 detailed route maps, plus maps of every lockstation showing the portage routes, and dozens of Points of Interest from Kingston to Ottawa.
If you plan to paddle all or part of the Rideau Canal – this guide is for you. It is available as a free PDF download from Ken Watson’s website, rideau-info.com.
Clearly the product of his passion, the Watson Paddling Guide for the Rideau Canal is everything you would need to get your trip planning started!
The guide is free, but if you use it why not donate to the Friends of the Rideau? That’s Ken’s choice!
