Gatineau Park Cross Country Ski Conditions Page Re-Launched

December 7, 2011 in xc skiing

xc_skisThe NCC has re-launched their cross country ski conditions page, with a up-to-date weather and snow conditions and trail status for their hundreds of kilometres of classic, skate, and back-country ski trails.

I’ll confess, I’m going to re-vamp the OutdoorOttawa Ottawa Nordic page to pull in real-time updates very shortly, so you can get all your trail updates from both the NCC and the community in one simple place.

No sign of updates from the NCC’s other xc trails in the Greenbelt, but I just don’t think there’s much infrastructure for that. As is, the trails are managed by volunteer groups… they should use OutdoorOttawa’s Ottawa Nordic page to communicate trail status updates, eh?!

The page looks pretty negative with all the thumbs-down, since nothing’s open yet, but the new NCC site is nice and clean compared to its predecessor.

View the NCC cross country ski conditions page here.

Forest Lea MTB Trails Get New Bridge, Trails, Loops… and Signs!

July 13, 2011 in mountain biking

forest_lea_loop_markersThe gang at managing the Forest Lea mountain bike trails have announced a few new features over the past couple weeks, so if you haven’t been recently you should go check out the tracks!

Last week Jeff Jackson posted about some new loops and markers at Forest Lea:

4 loops are now marked. Oli’s / Q is a separate loop of 5k roughly, Kruzer is the easiest trails and is about 7k of the Original Route, which is about 12. The back loops are Roller Coaster, Rocky Top and Brian’s Bridge, marked on thier own and it is up to you to loop them if you are back there. There are also ‘shortcut to parking lot’ signs to help out newcomers.

He also mentioned that there’s a new bridge on Roller Coaster, one of the back loops.

Nakkertok Takes Val-des-Monts to Court Over Land Expropriation

March 11, 2011 in xc skiing

nakkertokThe Nakkertok Ski Club fears their cross country ski trails will be destroyed and has taken the Municipality of Val-des-Monts to court over the municipality’s efforts to expropriate 35 acres of club land for a soccer field.

The Low Down Online is reporting that the municipality and the ski club had been in discussions over use of the land but, after the talks collapsed last spring, the club received a notice of expropriation in the summer.

Aside from being confused about the need for a full 35 acres of their land (“It takes two acres to build a soccer field,” said Christophe Weber, son of one of the land owners), the Nakkertok club is worried that much of its 80 kilometres of cross-country ski trails will become inaccessible, and costly new roads and accesses will be needed.

Sue Holloway, daughter of the other land owner, was more blunt:

“If they do this, it will destroy our club.”
