Cabins and Yurts

demsis_downWhat better way to stretch out a visit to Gatineau Park than with a stay in one of their yurts or cabins? That was my thought, too, until I noticed the NCC’s reservation site for winter campsites, cabins, and yurts is offline. It turns out reservations are on hold until the winter season opens on November 1st at 9am!

Lost Your Tent? There’s an App for That!

April 28, 2011 in outdoor tech

tent_finder

Ever been to a massive campsite, or maybe a music festival, and could find your way back to your tent? Maybe a couple mid-afternoon beers in the sun has clouded your sense of direction? No worries: Tent Finder will help you get home!

Once you’ve pitched your tent simply stand beside it (or better yet inside it), launch TentFinder, and tap "Add Place", which gives you the latitude and longitude of your current location. From here you can name the location and assign a photograph (either using the camera or from your existing camera roll)

When you’re ready to head back to your tent, tap the “Find” button and you will be presented with a map of the area along with a directional compass and guide line to head in. As you move, the compass and directional line will update ensuring you take the quickest and easiest route back to your tent.

You can also add your friends’ tents, washrooms and other festival-related locations, like the beer tent!

Tent Finder is available in the iTunes store for just $1.99.

Ontario Parks Website Updating Reservation System

November 16, 2010 in camping

ontario_parksThe Ontario Parks website has posted a notice to let us know they’re doing some renovations to their web-based reservation system, and campers can’t make campsite reservations online or on the phone during the upgrade.

A contract has been given to a new reservation service provider and upgrades are under way with the aim to “improve the service to the standard of excellence that you have come to expect from Ontario Parks”. Unfortunately, park users will not be able to make a reservation through the Internet or call centre for any car camping or interior sites during the upgrade.

Between November 1st and early January, 2011, all campsites will be processed on a first-come-first-served basis when you arrive at the park. Roofed accommodation can still be reserved at those parks open during the fall/winter period, but only by calling the park directly. Plus, reservations will be accepted for arrival dates up to March 31, 2011.

This means there will be no reservations processed for arrival dates after April 1, 2011 until Parks Canada goes live with the new service provider. This applies to reservations for campsites, backcountry and roofed accommodations.

You can find a list of parks with roofed accommodations at the Parks Canada website, and they’ve also got a little FAQ if you have more questions.

Gatineau Park Cabin and Yurt Reservation System Working

November 9, 2010 in camping, xc skiing

gatineau_park_reservation_map

The new Demsis website for Gatineau Park cabin, yurt, and campsite reservations is finally working, after a delayed and rocky launch.

Visitors to the new website, reservations.gatineaupark.ca, can select a date and view which campsites, including Gatineau Park’s 4 cabins and 3 yurts, are available. Visitors can also book and pay for their campsites right there and then, officially banishing the old, dysfunctional lottery system from existence.

Visitors can also purchase their cross country season’s passes at the new website and, although I didn’t complete my purchase, it appears to be fully functional, too. The system is set up to all you to purchase multiple passes, for yourself and others.

As a guy who runs a pretty complicated website, I can sympathize with the NCC and Demsis, and it’s nice to have this new system available!

Has anyone used the new system? What are your thoughts?
