Cabins and Yurts

demsis_downWhat better way to stretch out a visit to Gatineau Park than with a stay in one of their yurts or cabins? That was my thought, too, until I noticed the NCC’s reservation site for winter campsites, cabins, and yurts is offline. It turns out reservations are on hold until the winter season opens on November 1st at 9am!

Gatineau Park Winter Trails Officially Open

December 15, 2010 in camping, hiking, snowshoeing, xc skiing

P3030044Gatineau Park’s winter 250+ kilometres of winter trails officially opened today for another long winter of cross country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking and camping!

Gatineau Park is one of North America’s prime cross country ski destinations, and while some have already taken advantage of the early snow, the NCC is nonetheless pleased to announce 28% of their trail network – or 65km – is open and groomed for cross country skiers.

The open stretches for skiers are Fortune Parkway, the Gatineau Parkway and the Champlain Parkway, and you’ll find the ski conditions vary from fair to good.  All NCC winter services services are up and running, too, including the professional ski patrol, parking lot attendants and 24-hour trail maintenance. Visit the Cross Country Skiing in Gatineau Park group for more info!

Gatineau Park’s 45 kilometre snowshoe trail network is also open, accessible from parking lots 6, 13, 15, 17, 19 and the Gatineau Park Visitor Centre in Chelsea.

And for those who like to remain sure-footed on their own feet: the 10-kilometre winter walking trail network is also open to users for the season and is accessible from parking lots 3, 6 and the Gatineau Park Visitor Center in Chelsea.

Don’t forget about Gatineau Park’s winter camping options, too: there are 4 cabins and 3 yurts – I’m hitting up the Richard Lake Yurt next week! – available for overnight stays.

For the full NCC press release, visit the NCC website.

Cabin for Rent Along Fitzroy Park XC Ski Trails

December 7, 2010 in xc skiing

cabinI just came  across this cozy-looking cabin for rent in Fitzroy Provincial Park, along the Fitzroy Park cross country ski trails… a great way to convert your afternoon cross country ski into an overnight adventure!

From the Kijiji ad:

This is perfect for weekend getaways for cross country skiing or snowshoeing. The cabin is comfortable for 2 people. There is a sofa-bed, woodstove and small eating area. The cabin is off-grid – there is no hydro and the washroom is outside (outhouse). Heated by a woodstove (wood provided) and barbeque available for cooking. This cozy cabin is equipped with all pots, pans, plates and utensils, just bring your food and sleeping bags. This place is ideal for those who love outdoor activities or just relaxing at a quiet, secluded getaway while watching the deer go by.

The cabin is $75 per night, negotiable rates for stays longer than 2 nights, or $50 for members of the West Carleton Nordic Ski Club, which maintains the cross country ski trails.

Find out more about the cabin here at Kijiji.

Gatineau Park Cabin and Yurt Reservation System Working

November 9, 2010 in camping, xc skiing

gatineau_park_reservation_map

The new Demsis website for Gatineau Park cabin, yurt, and campsite reservations is finally working, after a delayed and rocky launch.

Visitors to the new website, reservations.gatineaupark.ca, can select a date and view which campsites, including Gatineau Park’s 4 cabins and 3 yurts, are available. Visitors can also book and pay for their campsites right there and then, officially banishing the old, dysfunctional lottery system from existence.

Visitors can also purchase their cross country season’s passes at the new website and, although I didn’t complete my purchase, it appears to be fully functional, too. The system is set up to all you to purchase multiple passes, for yourself and others.

As a guy who runs a pretty complicated website, I can sympathize with the NCC and Demsis, and it’s nice to have this new system available!

Has anyone used the new system? What are your thoughts?

Gatineau Park Reservation System Goes Online, Kinda Broken

November 8, 2010 in camping, xc skiing

gatineau_park_reservation_system_brokenThe new online reservation system for Gatineau Park Cabins and Yurts is officially online a of about a half-an-hour ago, but don’t expect to book your stay just yet!

The new website at reservations.gatineaupark.ca allows visitors to reserve any of the 4 cabins or 3 yurts available for winter camping in Gatineau Park. Visitors can also purchase their cross country skiing season’s pass at the new website, as well as reserve rental equipment.

Unfortunately, none of the reservation links actually work… so I’ll keep you posted. In the meantime, go check it out at reservations.gatineaupark.ca!
